Dream Vacation

Last month
i had,
only,
400 dollars
in my checkings account,
and I thought
about how my mom died
with only
400 dollars
in her bank account,
and I wondered
if I was going to die.

2005,
Before we enter the store,
she presses the pound sign,
and waits
for the automated lady
to tell us
how much
of anything
is left,
our ritual.

In my dream
i went to a national park
known for
the Best
Sunsets in the World.
Everything melted orange,
the mountains receding into
darker versions
of themselves.
There was a hotel
near the lake
i didn't have enough
money to stay at.

it was a famous hotel,
it tilted,
and I watched In the windows
as the maids ran by
trying to catch the dinner carts,
and everyone inside
had to hold on
as they sipped tea.
They seemed to
enjoy the novelty.
